Bacon is delicious. Usually you can stop right there and move on with life, but in this case, you cannot. Because bacon is both delicious, and sadly, bad for you. Yet, the general public does not care as we continue to wrap everything on this earth in bacon. Bacon & mozzarella wrapped pineapples anyone? So what does a poor foodie do when all they want is the delicious taste of bacon for their breakfast, lunch, and dinner? Well, you make it amazing of course!
A team of researchers at Oregon State University may have developed with the best thing since Nutella. There is a type of seaweed out there that, when cooked, tastes like bacon. Better than that, it’s better for you than kale. Kale! The super vegetable that all hipsters and Californian’s crave. Well, that’s being a little harsh, because kale is actually a pretty good vegetable on it’s own.
The real question is, even though this seaweed tastes like bacon, will it have the same texture and consistency of the amazing breakfast food? Well, most likely not, as it’s expected to be used in conjunction with other foods. Seaweed wrapped hot dogs may not be in our future. Also, it’s very expensive, so we may not see it in our supermarkets for years to come. But really, who cares? If there is a food out there that is not just good for you, but tastes like bacon, the geek food of champions, then we as a society need it.
Warm up your grills everyone, and get ready for some dulse (the name of the seaweed, and oddly enough, sounds like the Spanish word for candy), because our plates and our palettes are ready for it.
