Denver Comic Con – Day 1 Roundup!

Wow!  W.O.W.  What a busy day!  When it comes to cons, Denver Comic Con is still in its adolescence, especially when you look at shows like San Diego, and New York, but don’t let its age fool you.  While it hasn’t been around as long as some of the others, DCC still brings it when it comes to geek game, and it certainly hits the ground running when it comes to programming.

From the Pop Culture Classroom events, to its packed line-up of guests, the DCC team doesn’t take Friday was event after event!  If you weren’t waiting in line to meet your favorite celebrity, there’s still all of the amazing panels run by fans and professionals alike.  The two that really stood out today were The Women in the Geek Industry, and the Colorado Symphony panels.

IMG_2289The Women in the Geek Industry panel was head by a range of geeky professionals, including a cosplayer, a youtuber/comic shop owner, and a blogger/freelance writer who focuses on geek culture.  Instead of focusing on why being a women in the industry is hard, these young ladies instead focused on what they’ve done to make it better.  A popular reoccurring theme was ‘find your tribe’.  This panel was filled with helpful tips and advice for young lady geeks, but I think best of all was seeing all of the proud geek dads there with their little girls.  Not only are they showing them that they’re advocates of their success, but I have to say that these dads were some of the most engaged in the panel!  WIGI has been at DCC for several years now, so if you missed it this year, I highly recommend you add it to your lineup for DCC 2017!

Our other shout-out is to the Colorado Symphony panel, and not just ’cause we like those guys a lot!  I wasn’t really sure what to expect going into this, but we’ve worked with the Symphony before and love their folks, so I wanted to pop in and see what it was all about.  Let me tell you– it was about pretty much anything I’ve ever loved.  It had history, music history, geekery, music, laughs, a little bit of live music, and some snark all rolled up into one happy little symphony burrito.  I don’t know what a symphony burrito is but it’s 10:30 after a day of running around a convention hall, so I’m gonna roll with it!  You know what else happened in this panel?  Xena happened in this panel.  I’m not even going to give you context.  What I am going to do is tell you that their Geek Series is on sale, and you should head over to their website and check out tickets.  They didn’t even pay me to write that, I just like them that much.

On top of the fun content, we also got to see some pretty sweet cosplay around the convention hall.  I’ve only gone through a few shots, but here are my favorites so far!  We’ll see you tomorrow, DCC!  Look for any of our team on the show floor for some stickers! Amelia loved many great things as a kid, but Harry Potter and Batman were what really brought her in to the world of fandom. Her tastes are eclectic and she firmly believes that one doesn't have to choose between Marvel and DC or Star Wars and Star Trek. Charities and well developed, strong female characters are the way to her heart, and she survives on a steady IV of caffeine, rants, pixie dust and fangirling.
