Outlander 3.04 “Of Things Lost”

As the title suggests, episode four of the season centered around things lost to our favorite characters. This episode is crucial to the direction of future episodes and even seasons. And it cements many of the traits we already know about many of the leads. I am going to center my top five around each character and what they have lost or stand to lose! 1. Claire The simplest thing she had lost was the pearls Jamie gifted her from his mother. She had given them to Mrs. Graham upon…

Outlander 3.03 “All Debts Paid”

This week’s episode of Outlander, “All Debts Paid” got back to the tone I want to see in the show. This episode is full of story and sets up many of the events that will carry through the season. We meet Lord John Grey, a character that will continue to be an important addition for seasons to come. 1. Pacing, Pacing, Pacing The pacing of this week’s episode was excellent. We moved seamlessly through Jamie’s new time at Ardsmuir Prison and Claire’s life in Boston. We cover years of story with…

Outlander 3.02 “Surrender”

Episode 2 of the season is Surrender. It is the perfect title, as many characters do just that. As everyone surrenders to their lives as they are now, the loneliness oozes off the screen. I also found myself longing for some elements of the book that were changed. Overall I have to say this is one of my least favorite episodes. While I feel I am generous in understanding major changes from the books, I feel like several choices in this episode change my long term feelings towards many characters.…

Outlander 3.01 ‘The Battle Joined’

Well, Sassenachs, the day has come and our long droughtlander has concluded. It is time to join the battle. Every now and then I doubt my Outlander obsession. I think that maybe I am just too deep in having gone through the journey of the books countless times. Then I see a new episode and I realize that it really is one of the best crafted shows on television. Every element is consistently breathtaking. From the scripts, to the camera work, to the locations, to the costumes (oh the costumes!),…

Jane the Virgin, Episode 3.03, “Chapter Forty-Seven” Top 5

Monday’s Jane the Virgin was a very solid episode. Many storylines were advanced in this episode. With a famous guest director (Eva Longoria), the major life events and some surprise guest stars, it easily could have been a finale or premiere. Instead, a major shift in the dynamic was placed in a regular episode. I think this is a great choice because life doesn’t shift only twice a year. That is an approach to storytelling that keeps me hooked each week. Any week could be an important episode. There was…

Jane the Virgin, Episode 3.02, Chapter Forty-Six Top 5

It is a week late, but I wanted to throw you all a Top 5 from last week’s Jane the Virgin before this week’s shows up! This episode covers both Jane and Michael’s emotional and physical recovery from the shooting. Pretty much the only character not in turmoil this episode is Rafael, who is finally moving on from Jane and seems to have a weight lifted off his shoulders. He had better enjoy it though, because all indications are that Magda, Anezka, and an unexpected rival will soon be making…

The Walking Dead Episode 7.01, “The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be” Top 5

Your regular The Walking Dead Top 5 writer is traveling tonight, so I am stepping in. Hopefully I do her justice. As often happens with this show, I was watching most of it through my fingers. Many tears were shed on screen and in my room. I hope you kept the tissues handy because, as promised, this was a doozy. What made this episode different from previous losses was the personal nature of the violence. Others have fallen due to circumstances. Never before have we seen this level of sadistic…

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend 2.01, “Where Is Josh’s Friend?” Top 5

Rebecca Bunch waltzed back into our living rooms last night in what turned out to be an unexpectedly weighty episode of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. We pick up right where season one ended and they make sure to give us an update on almost all major characters throughout the duration of the episode. The only one we don’t actually see is Valencia, who I assume is licking her wounds from her breakup with Josh. She has been promoted to series regular though so she should be back very soon. I have to…

Jane the Virgin 3.01 “Chapter Forty-Five” Top 5

Jane the Virgin is back this week with Chapter Forty-Five. I have decided to pick up Top 5s for this show as well as Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Between the two I am pretty sure I will survive Droughtlander! It seems that my inner geek loves shows that pair well with a glass of wine. In true telenovela form, you really don’t need all the backstory to pick up Jane the Virgin right now. The helpful narrator gives you a rundown of important points from the past at the top of each episode.…

Outlander 2.13 “Dragonfly in Amber” Top 6

If you are reading this, I assume you have made it through the stones to the end of the Outlander season 2 finale, Dragonfly in Amber. If you haven’t, then stop now! Go watch it! What are you doing reading posts online? I was completely surprised that they managed to squeeze in every remaining important plot point from the book into these last 90 minutes. I really shouldn’t be surprised at this point. The skill these writers use to make engaging television without losing the major scenes, themes, characters, and…

Outlander 2.12 “The Hail Mary” Top 5

As the title The Hail Mary implies, many of the events of the episode cover the last chance efforts by Claire and Jamie to derail Culloden. In many ways this episode felt like a finale of a season of Doctor Who where we need to clear the path story-wise for the movie to come. I am inclined to think Diana Gabaldon would approve of that comparison since the general idea of Jamie was sparked by an old episode of Doctor Who. The “movie” for this will be July 9 when…

Outlander 2.11 “Vengeance Is Mine” Top 5

Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ! That was quite the episode of Outlander! Written by Diana Gabaldon herself, our race to Culloden continued to take our breath away. The episode covered several events from the book, and we even got a reprieve on a few deaths I was bracing for. This week you can set down the tissues and grab the arms of your chair as I cut right into the top 5 topics of episode 11, Vengeance Is Mine. What a well written episode. Diana really was showing off. What I…

Outlander 2.10 “Prestonpans” Top 5

We are fast approaching the end of the season and the creators of Outlander just won’t let us rest! Another heart pounding, fast paced, and traumatic episode met us in Prestonpans. I spent the first half of the episode wondering who would survive. Somehow, amidst all of this, the episode was able to make me laugh out loud more than once too. I think that is the main appeal of this story for me. The ability to laugh with war looming feels true. We can all relate to the need…

Outlander 2.09 “Je Suis Prest” Top 5

Are you ready? The Frasers are, or they are at least on their way to being ready. This episode was a great step forward in advancing us to war. The first hint to me that the mood was changing was the imagery in the opening titles. The kilted warriors charging into battle was an ominous sign to say the least. All of our favorite Scots are back together as they march to meet up with Charlie’s troops. While this episode definitely dealt in some heavy subject matter, I did not…

Outlander 2.08 “The Fox’s Lair” Top 5

After a few weeks of personal turmoil, this episode jumps strongly back to the political intrigue element of the story. As shown in the preview, we do return to Scotland in this episode. That means we get the chance to see some past favorite characters, as well as a few old foes. We also meet a handful of new characters. Another past character pops up in a twist that surprised book readers everywhere. You know I have thoughts on that, so get your hounds ready as we venture into The…

Outlander 2.07 “Faith” Top 5

How to even begin? This week’s episode was heart wrenching on every possible level. Every time I took a second to breathe, I was hit with a new blow. Faith was one of those episodes that covered so much ground, I don’t even know where to start. Even though we get our entire season in succession this time around, this really felt like a mid-season finale. It definitely wraps up nearly every one of the Paris storylines. There is so much turmoil to cover. I am probably crazy, if nothing…
