The Brave Little Toaster turns 30

This week marks the 30th anniversary of one of my favorite films, The Brave Little Toaster. This movie has a special place in my heart. It’s one of the first movies that I have memories of watching. Many who grew up in the 80s or 90s have “that” VHS tape that they watched countless times. The Brave Little Toaster is my worn out VHS. I must’ve been 5 or 6 years old when I first saw it. I remember loving the characters and the music. I was also absolutely terrified…

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks Review

When the first preview for The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks came on mid-Big Little Lies binge, I was excited. This woman’s contributions to science are immeasurable, but not in the typical way. For those of you unfamiliar with Henrietta, let me introduce you. Her DNA, now known as “HeLa”, is responsible for thousands, if not millions, of scientific breakthroughs. You may be familiar with the polio vaccine, or gene mapping?  Her DNA is to thank. However, until recent years, her name was erased from the history books. Here’s the low-down on…

Taking a Look at a Popular Beauty and the Beast Fan Theory

We’ve all heard the fan theory about the Beast that was making the internet rounds a few years back. You know the one I’m talking about. Where the Enchantress is actually a psycho who curses a child for not letting a stranger into his house? The entire basis for this fan theory rests on two pieces of information: 1) The line in the opening sequence that says the rose will bloom until his 21st year. 2) Lumier’s complaint that they’ve been “rusting” for ten years without anyone to serve. Taken…

Okay fine.     Best Picture: Arrival Fences Hacksaw Ridge Hell or High Water Hidden Figures La La Land Lion Manchester by the Sea Moonlight Lead Actress: Isabelle Huppert, Elle Ruth Negga, Loving Natalie Portman, Jackie Emma Stone, La La Land Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins…

Denver Comic Con – Day 3 Roundup

Sunday is usually the wind-down day at most conventions, but that wasn’t even close to the case at Denver Comic Con!  I didn’t stop sprinting from panel to panel until the very end of the day, and even then the convention was still going strong.  Typically everything is dead by 3, but Avistrum Academy’s panel was at 5:15 and they were filled from the gills.  With preliminary numbers of 114,900, it’s not hard to see why!   The final day of the show kicked off with Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who…

Denver Comic Con – Day 2 Roundup

Anyone who’s attended a comic con before can attest that there’s no scale to explain the kind of tired that is con tired.  Your senses are constantly bombarded all day long as you try to take in all of the amazing geekery that you’ve been waiting all year to be a part of again.  It’s that deeply satisfying kind of tired.  The type that comes with a sleepy smile and the satisfaction that you spent a day (or several) inundated with all of your pop culture favorites.   Denver Comic Con…

Denver Comic Con – Day 1 Roundup!

Wow!  W.O.W.  What a busy day!  When it comes to cons, Denver Comic Con is still in its adolescence, especially when you look at shows like San Diego, and New York, but don’t let its age fool you.  While it hasn’t been around as long as some of the others, DCC still brings it when it comes to geek game, and it certainly hits the ground running when it comes to programming. From the Pop Culture Classroom events, to its packed line-up of guests, the DCC team doesn’t take Friday…

When Fandom Attacks: Hydra Cap

Earlier this week, Captain America #1 was released, and the internet subsequently exploded in a rage.  I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t one of the people who was furious.  When it comes to Marvel, Captain America is easily in my top 3 heroes.  I love what he stands for, both in the comics and the MCU.  How dare they make him utter those words!? I don’t even like it when people I know say it jokingly!  WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE!?

Peggy Carter Isn’t Dead

Today was a rough day. I first heard about the cancellation from a friend.  It was a few moments before the news broke online, so all I texted him back was a single ‘No’.  That got followed by another, and then by a ‘No it isn’t’.  He responded with a simple ‘I’m sorry’, and that was the end of it.  It wasn’t that I didn’t trust him, of course, more that I refused to believe that such a thing would happen.  A few moments after the exchange the tweets started…

Captain America: Civil War (DON’T TOUCH BUCKY!)

Ugh you guys this started out as a super serious, objective review and that is just not my voice, so I gave up on that.  I figure if you want something of the like you can go to Nerdist, IGN, or some other big fancy site.  My friend Alisha wrote a pretty awesome one too, you can find it here.  Anyway, here are my thoughts from Captain America: Civil War (DON’T TOUCH BUCKY!) THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS Don’t Mess With Fam Ok, when Civil War got announced I basically went…

Emerald City Comic Con 2016

In the heart of the Subway and coffee capital of the world, sits the Washington State Convention Center; and in that convention center, is the Emerald City Comic Con. A four day pop culture and comic book convention housed in five floors and three, separate buildings in the middle of the Seattle metropolis. This is where our adventure begins. Teamed up with Points of Interest’s fearless leader, Josh Hawkes, we set out to conquer the Emerald City Comic Con and our trepidation. Something to know about this convention is that…

Super Special Spoiler Free Deadpool Review

Hi kids, how’s it going!  Let’s just kick this off right now with if you’re actually a ‘kid’ probably don’t read any further.  Deadpool wasn’t made for you, and I’m about to use Deadpool-like words.  Are you even paying attention to me?  Hey!  Seriously, that’s really rude.  Didn’t your parents teach you any manners? Do I have you back now?  Good.  So, here’s my review– what you’ve all been waiting for: You don’t give a fuck what I think, go see the goddamn movie. Hugs and kisses! Featured Image via…

Alan Rickman: Always…

There will be many things shared today regarding Alan Rickman. Those who knew him will mourn his passing on a personal level. From an outsider’s perspective, he was a very reserved but charming individual, and watching interviews with him it is easy to imagine him as someone most people would instantly find likeable and charming. His friends and family will I’m sure miss him dearly, think of him fondly, and take comfort in the fact that he is no longer in pain. For those of us who only knew him…

James Gunn Loves You, But Is Done Denying Your Theories

James Gunn is 100% done confirming or denying Guardians of the Galaxy rumors. Gunn is one of several celebrities with a very active social media presence. He’s great with his fans, always answering questions on his Facebook, holding live Q&A, and interacting with fans on Twitter. The crux of doing so is that he gets asked the same questions over and over and over again. If he announces a Q&A, it can immediately be assumed that he will get hundreds of ‘What was the Easter Egg in Guardians? How does…

All Aboard The Hogwarts Express

On June 26, 1997 a generation of witches and wizards were born. Over a span of many years we learned spells and potions, made new friends, played quidditch for the first time, and fought dark lords. It has been 18 years since we first started this journey of magic together. Since we first stepped foot on the Hogwarts Express and were carried off to the wonderful world that was created by J.K Rowling, and learned that real magic really does exist. “Of course it is happening inside your head,…

Wes Craven: 1939 – 2015

My mother worked 3 jobs when I was growing up. As a result, and in a cost-saving measure, I spent a great deal of time at my Aunt Cathy’s house watching movies with my cousin Samantha. These movies were typically collections recorded from some other medium (cable?) onto BetaMax cassettes, but my favorite cassette had only one film on it, one film that I would watch on an almost daily basis: “A Nightmare on Elm Street”. The film enthralled me. I couldn’t have been more than six years old at…
